What is a Teaching Artist?
Teaching artists are—and you can make the assertion that every artist is a Teaching Artist—community leaders, artists-in-residence, public school arts teachers, cultural preservationists, and local musicians, dancers, actors, painters, sculptors, and anyone who calls themself an artist. Whether through simple everyday sharing of the artist’s daily life or through a formalized Residency structure, we show the world through a lens not necessarily traveled by everyone, but one that benefits all.
“Here are two additional definitions of a teaching artist that resonate[...]
A teaching artist is the model of the 21st century artist, and simultaneously, a model for high-engagement learning in education;
A teaching artist is the future of art in America.“
(Booth, E., (2009), The Music Teaching Artist’s Bible, Oxford University Press)
My work as a Teaching Artist has carried me for many years now through experiences that I would not have had if my life followed a different career path. My luck, good fortune, grace—call it what you like—means that I can spend my time sharing what I have learned with others so that they too can become a Teaching Artist right in their own backyard, or classroom as the case may be.
